Freshman Year -- creative nonfiction by Isabella Burns

“I thought we were friends?” she asked, sounding more like an accusation. We were inseparable friends. It was suffocating, her jealousy and neediness foreign to a girl always put second after cheer or Frank Ocean. Now the tables had turned.

“I just want to be able to see other people.” Was it normal to have to ask your friends this? I blame her mother’s cancer.

“You were my first real crush, you know.” It was impossible not to. The hugs and pleas for attention made it obvious.

When did I get so cruel?

Isabella Burns is a junior at Amador Valley High School. On her days off from being a hostess and tutor, she can be found reading E.M. Forster or watching trashy TV. Her inspirations range from Greek mythology to Metallica, although she particularly enjoys British literature. She lives with her parents, sister, and pug-chihuahua mix, Brie.
